DSM in Sports, leisure & consumer goods: In the lead
From skiing to sailing to bobsleighing and golf balls, we support sport. In leisure, our plastics and resins can be found in everything from power tools to picture glass.
Those who play and enjoy sport - from Olympians to rank amateurs - want better, lighter, higher-performing equipment; while in our everyday lives we’re increasingly looking for goods that perform well, look good, last longer, and use as little energy as possible, both in their production and use.
Competitive Sport
We understand more than most what it takes to be a winner – which is why DSM supports sport in its many forms. With success or failure measured by the tiniest margins, our products give athletes the edge in equipment, clothing and nutrition.
The Dutch Olympic bobsleigh team has benefitted from a composite resin we originally designed for the automotive industry called Turane®. It’s stronger than a traditional epoxy resin and most importantly can withstand freezing temperatures. Our composite resin technology has also helped the Dutch women’s 470 class sailing team win a Silver medal at the Beijing Olympics – by creating a lighter, stronger, stiffer and thus faster boat. Also name Dyneema®, because it is used in the ropes.
In clothing we’ve used our knowledge of performance materials to develop a pioneering single-layer skating suit made from Dyneema® high-performance polyethylene fiber that protects athletes and keeps them cool. Meanwhile our Arnitel® thermoplastic is leading a new generation of non-microporous sporting clothes that let sweat and moisture out, while stopping moisture (and germs) getting in. And it’s not just about the outside. Our PeptoPro® nutritional supplement helps athletes perform longer and at a higher level by transporting sugars into muscle tissue thus preserving energy, whilst actually building muscle protein after heavy exercise.
Leisure pursuits
If you’re a golfer, our plastics help make the clubs and the balls – as well as sports shoes.
For the fisherman, lines made with our Dyneema® fiber are just half the width of traditional ones, providing the ideal combination of exceptional strength, light weight, sensitivity, suppleness, and reliability. Staying with boating, Dyneema® is also being used to make stronger, more durable sails and sailing ropes thanks to the material’s ability to withstand salt, UV – and of course water.
Consumer goods
In everyday life DSM can be found virtually everywhere. Our powder-coated resins provide protection and aesthetics in furniture, household appliances and kitchen equipment. Our ®claryl anti-reflective picture glass is bringing a whole new dimension to paintings and photos, making them clearer and more vibrant.
Moving outside, for petrol-driven garden and power tools our plastics are cutting emissions thanks to petrol tanks made out of Akulon® Fuel Lock, which enables our customers to design thinner-walled fuel tanks that reduce weight and material, helping to reduce system costs and fuel consumption.
