Waterproof, breathable films

We believe the market for waterproof, breathable films is about explode thanks to an innovative new monolithic technology from DSM that can replace micropores and gives manufacturers a higher quality, reliability and flexibility in applications for waterproof, breathable films.

Can you help?

Today film is used for roofing membranes, medical, leisure and sportswear. But we don’t believe these are the only applications. Could you help us find some new ones?

The challenge

Breathable, waterproof film is a popular technology for a wide range of applications - from roofing membranes and medical to leisure and sportswear.

If you know this technology you’ll be aware that microporous systems are not perfect when it comes to breathable film applications. In terms of resistance to water and bacteria, and in fact the quality of breathability, there was much room for improvement…so we invented Arnitel® VT.

The solution

Our new material for breathable, waterproof film is based on monolithic technology that offers genuine micropore replacement. It’s an intelligent film that gives manufacturers the very best of both worlds: A comprehensive barrier to liquids and moisture while being light and soft. We call it Arnitel VT.

The Arnitel VT material is intelligent because it reacts to the environment and regulates its performance accordingly. Take an example from daily life: You go running with clothes containing a waterproof and breathable film made from Arnitel VT. When you start running, you don’t sweat and thus the film made from Arnitel VT  doesn’t breathe, which keeps you warm. But once you really start to sweat, the film will react, maximizing its breathability, absorbing the water vapor from the skin and directing it outwards through your clothes - transporting the body heat and keeping you cool.

Furthermore, unlike microporous polypropylene, the Arnitel VT membrane doesn’t shrink at elevated temperatures; which means it doesn’t crack; which in turn eliminates the risks of leakage, less comfort in clothing, contamination in medical products, mould and (in the case of roofing for example) wood rot. Another major plus point is that the material is halogen free and in comparison to PTFE, our carbon footprint is a staggering 60 times lower.
