In May 2011 Reverdia announced the construction of a commercial-scale plant for the production of Biosuccinium sustainable succinic acid in Cassano Spinola, Italy. Operations commenced in December 2012 as the world’s first dedicated, large-scale plant for the production of succinic acid from renewable resources. The 10,000 tonnes/yr plant was the first of its kind commercial facility using low-pH yeast technology to enable the production of a high quality, environmentally friendly product.
While current markets for succinic acid include pharmaceuticals, food, flavor, coatings, pigments and metal plating, Reverdia believes that the production of a high quality, bio-based succinic acid, such as Biosuccinium, will cause new applications to emerge and open new markets. These include the production of bio-based polyurethanes, polybutylene succinate (PBS), plasticizers, composite and coating resins, solvents, 1,4 butanediol and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) for usage in many end-user products like packaging, footwear, elastane clothing, shopping bags, mulch films, automotive interior and more.
