DSM collaborates with CPVT in The Bright Minds Challenge to accelerate the scaling of renewable energy innovation projects in China

DSM and partners support science-based innovation in solar and energy storage

Royal DSM, a global science-based company active in health, nutrition and materials, has signed a contract with the Chinese National Center of Supervision and Inspection on Solar Photovoltaic Products Quality (CPVT) to jointly promote the in-depth implementation of the Bright Minds Challenge, and encourage enterprises, institutions of higher education, research institutions and individuals in the renewable energy and solar photovoltaic fields in China to submit solar energy and energy storage  innovation projects. CPVT will join a global consortium including Accenture, Greentown Labs, Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship of the University of Oxford, Solarcentury, SolarAid, Sungevity and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The consortium is led by DSM and will provide winning projects in the Challenge with globalized incubating support, including a tailored package of commercial, technical and mentoring support to help scientists scale up their solutions as quickly as possible.

In recent years, China has been actively promoting the development in energy transformation. In 2014, President Xi Jinping proposed the national policy of “Promoting Energy Production and Consumption Revolution in China” and the strategic concept of “Four Revolutions and One Cooperation”. In November 2015, the Chinese government collaborated with International Renewable Energy Agency to convene the International Forum on Energy Transitions in Suzhou, China, and proposed the initiative to jointly push global energy transformation (Information source: http://www.nea.gov.cn/).

Since the beginning of 2016, the state has carried out a flurry of activities in the field of renewable energy. There were major forums and conferences in every quarter, bringing forward a series of guidance for the development of renewable energy. From the AsiaSolar Photovoltaic Innovative Technology Exhibition & Cooperation Forum in March, to the G20 Ministerial Meeting in June, then to the proposal by the State Council to optimize the grid connection mechanism for new energy power generation such as PV and wind power in August, and finally to the 13th Five-year Plan on Electric Power Development officially published by NDRC and NEA on 7 November which pinpoints to the development of new energy, the layout of China in terms of energy strategies is basically defined (Information source: http://www.nea.gov.cn/).

In the process of pushing the revolution at the supply side, the promotion of efficient exploitation and utilization of traditional coal resources must be considered in the production and supply of power. At the same time, the pace of developing renewable energy sources such as hydropower, wind power, solar power and biomass energy must be quickened to optimize the layout of energy production. Renewable energy is of key strategic significance in national economic development, and technological innovation and talents are of paramount importance.

Over the years, DSM has been promoting science-based innovation and the strategy of sustainable development. The Bright Minds Challenge is a global innovation movement targeted at this objective. The movement strives to actively promote innovation, unleash the creativity of talented scientists all over the world, quicken the transformation of the world towards renewable energy, specifically in solar and energy storage, and eventually bring benefits to all.

Throughout the years, we have seen many excellent scientific research talents who made a great number of technical innovations in the field of solar PV and energy storage. Very often, due to the lack of support from professional commercial and marketing institutions and persons, scientific researchers had to wait for very long from the generation of a new technology to its application on a large scale. The initiators of the Bright Minds Challenge are institutions and enterprises with strong professional background globally, who are dedicated to the incubation of 100% renewable energy projects. Anyone with a solution relevant to renewable energy, especially in the fields of solar power and renewable energy storage, can submit an entry. This is a great opportunity for scientific talents in China.” Said Wu Jianguo, the Director of CPVT, during the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, Oscar Goddijn, Vice President of DSM Advanced Surfaces mentioned, “Our Bright Minds Challenge hopes to identify and help accelerate the scaling of solutions for 100% renewable energy – focusing on solar and energy storage. This is very much aligned to the local government’s energy strategy focus, which was outlined by Premier Li Keqiang at the National Energy Commission Meeting to actively promote energy consumption and savings so as to better support the sustainable and stable development of the Chinese economy.”

He added that “The Bright Minds Challenge is a global scientific challenge initiated by DSM through collaborations. We opened the challenge at a global scale calling for submissions on renewable energy. As the most dynamic nation in the Asian region, as well as a major producer and consumer of energy, China has an urgent need for renewable energy. Currently, China has many scientists and professionals engaged in the innovation and development of new technologies. We believe that our partnership with CPVT will encourage greater submissions of scientific innovations coming through our Bright Minds Challenge, from this community.”

The Bright Minds Challenge is a movement open to all. It is jointly expressed by Mr. Oscar Goddijn and Director Wu Jianguo that members of the public are encouraged to get involved by spreading the message to help find the scientists with solutions, and then to share their submissions and vote for the most promising ones.

About the Bright Minds Challenge

The central platform of the Bright Minds Challenge is www.sciencecanchangetheworld.org. From now on, the platform will be open to the public and start to accept submissions of solutions. The deadline for submissions is 1 February. In February 2017, a public vote will be held to determine the top 10 solutions. The committee of experts of the Bright Minds Challenge will then shortlist the top three and select the ultimate winner.

The top three solutions will all receive commercial, technical and mentoring support, with the winner getting 500 hours of tailored help to fast-forward their solution. All entrants will receive valuable exposure for their projects.

The winners will be announced in June 2017.

CPVT

The National Center of Supervision and Inspection on Solar Photovoltaic Products Quality (CPVT) is located in Wuxi, China, which was established upon the approval of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China in 2007.

CPVT has a highly qualified photovoltaic inspection and research team, with nearly 100 employees and over 100 million RMB invested in fixed equipment assets.
