Reducing emotional stress

Traditional autologous breast reconstruction surgery often involves a significant recovery period because tissue is relocated from elsewhere on the woman’s body. A common alternative is to use a breast implant. To help meet women’s hopes and expectations, our scientists went back to nature to develop a surgical mesh for soft tissue repair based on Extracellular Matrix (ECM) technology which could help to support the weight of the implant while the body heals.

Biological “scaffolding”

In nature, ECMs are extracellular molecules secreted by cells that provide structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells. This biological “scaffolding” is known to play an important role in tissue re-growth and healing, so our scientists decided to create our own version to help breast cancer survivors.

100% natural

Our analytical and biological scientists identified porcine mesothelial tissue as the starting material with the best handling and physical properties for the scaffold. To ready the mesothelium for clinical use it was treated with our proprietary OPTRIX™ process - which gently disinfects tissues, inactivates viruses and removes cells while preserving the native ECM structure and components. The result? A 100%-natural, easy-to-handle surgical mesh for soft tissue repair that not only provides excellent strength, but also a biologically friendly scaffold.

Some of Europe’s leading plastic surgeons are now using the Meso BioMatrix Surgical Mesh to help reinforce the soft tissue around a breast implant and maintain its position (Meso BioMatrix Surgical Mesh is distributed by Groupe Sebbin in Europe).

Meanwhile, in the United States the Meso BioMatrix Surgical Mesh is now being investigated for use in two-stage reconstructions to support a tissue expander prior to implant placement - via a 25-patient, single-arm Pilot Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study.

How it works

Surgical Meshes are used in single-stage or two-stage reconstructions. During the first stage of a two-stage reconstruction, the plastic surgeon releases the pectoralis muscle from the chest wall and attaches the surgical mesh to the pectoralis muscle and to the chest wall just below the breast. This creates a pocket for a tissue expander, which is then implanted in the pocket, partially inflated, and gradually filled with saline over several weeks or months until it reaches the desired volume. In the second stage, this tissue expander is removed and replaced with a permanent implant.

In single-stage reconstruction there is no tissue expansion - the permanent implant is simply inserted immediately after releasing the pectoralis muscle.
