I’m currently working on...

Continuously developing the next generation of performance materials within several R&T expert teams. The new performance materials for high-end applications that we are developing at DSM are increasingly based on renewable resources, which, in turn, are improving our ecological footprint. For driving forward these developments and implementing innovative ideas with high speed, a strong background in materials sciences, as well as knowledge on analytical strategies, is required.

The aspect of my work that excites and inspires me the most is...

Establishing structure-property relations in materials. By understanding the influence that molecular architecture and applied processing conditions have on properties, a large variety of properties can be tuned in a smart and effective way. This leads to the development of high-performance materials. In this respect, advanced analytics/characterization is one of the key competences needed to enable progress in this field, and it’s my responsibility to sustain and further develop this competence.

The breakthrough I would most like to see made in my field is...

Finding the answer to the question: “What does the surface or interface of my product look like, which (macro)molecules are present, and how are they organized?” In almost any application area of DSM – independent of life or materials science backgrounds – my colleagues will ask this same question. The answer would provide us with information about whether the enzymes, additives, fillers, etc., are at the desired location in the product surface or interface. However, discovering an answer to this question is scientifically very challenging – although recent technological breakthroughs in local “chemical imaging” may prove helpful.
