I am currently working on...
For the last 4½ years, I’ve been working on localized drug delivery. The challenge is using our unique biodegradable polymers to formulate pharmaceuticals and to create concepts that can be locally implanted or injected. Placing these drug delivery systems locally allows the drug to be released directly into the area that is in need of treatment, where the tissue is diseased. In this way, the treatment is very effective and the total amount of drug is kept very low, avoiding side effects.
The aspect of my work that excites and inspires me the most is...
The opportunity to work on very complex and important projects, which can have a positive impact on millions of people’s lives around the world. This requires a large number of disciplines to be at the cutting edge of their individual fields, as well as able to work effectively in collaboration. Being the connecting point between these disciplines and learning from each of them has been a highly exciting experience and makes the area I’m working in a rewarding place to be.
The breakthrough I would most like to see made in my field is...
In the medical devices and surgical field, I’d like to see us securing and maintaining the upper hand on infections. And in the pharmaceutical field, I’d love to see real progress made in terms of combating dementia in all its terrible forms.
