The aspect of my work that excites and inspires me the most is...

Building a new RT&D organization, starting with establishing strong academic networks in order to recruit scientific talent. It’s particularly exciting to see how newly recruited scientists develop after they are well-trained in the latest scientific competences, and to see their passion to develop new ones and apply these in contributing to business growth. This growth, in turn, benefits our society and the lives of the current and future generations, which is very inspiring.

I think the biggest game-changer to impact my field of work is...

Sustainability! An example is the sustainability of the flame retardants used in the Electrical & Electronics industry. Due to concerns about potential health hazards, halogen-containing flame retardants are now being phased out and replaced with halogen-free flame retardants. However, the overall performance of currently available halogen-free flame retardants is still inferior to those containing halogen. So, halogen-free flame retardants that can match the performance of their halogen-containing counterparts would be a real game-changer.

I think open innovation and external collaboration in my field is important because...

…of the added value it creates, particularly collaboration between DSM and academia . Professors and students in academia are advancing scientific understanding and developing new theories and models all the time. Meanwhile, we at DSM are applying the advancements, as well as the newly developed theories and models, in order to solve real-life problems. In other words, DSM and academia are partners in the scientific value chain.
