FAQ
Crosslinking
How can I determine if Crossliner CX-100 is still active in my formulation after 24 hours?
The easiest way to be sure that Crosslinker CX-100 is still active in your formulation would be to re-check resistance properties and see if you still have the desired performance properties after 24 hours.

What is the useable pot life of Crosslinker CX-100 after it is added to the formulation?
Crosslinker CX-100 will hydrolyse and should be used within 1-3 days after preparation. Hydrolyzed CX-100 has no adverse effect on either the latex or dried film resistance properties. However, film hardness may suffer as the deactivated crosslinker acts to plasticize the film. A 2/1 or 3/1 blend of fresh to aged formula is recommended before re-inoculation with crosslinker at the original amount to maintain formula consistency.

What level of Crosslinker CX-100 do you recommend?
Crosslinker CX-100 is 100% active polyfunctional aziridine liquid crosslinker, which can be used to crosslink polymers with reactive carboxyl functionality. CX-100 is a multifunctional material with an equivalent weight of 156. For many applications, 0.6 equivalents of CX-100 are sufficient to achieve the optimum improvements in film properties. However, some systems may require the full stoichiometric equivalent of crosslinker. Crosslinker CX-100 when used with acrylic emulsions or waterborne urethane polymers produces a marked improvement in water, chemical, abrasion and humidity resistance. It is ideal for use with fast air-dry NeoCryl® acrylic emulsion NeoRez ®waterborne urethanes and NeoPac® urethane acrylic co-polymers.

Decorative Paints
The architectural coating I'm working on needs mar improvement. What would you recommend?
For the American Market:
Instead of costly additives, you may want to try NeoRez® R-9649. This polyurethane adds the benefits of lower unit cost as referenced to additives;is a liquid resin, thus lowering VOC;and is effective at levels of 1-3% of resin solids for ease of use.Now your coating is Polyurethane Enhanced, recognized as a key benefit to the consumer market.

What DSM NeoResins+ product gives the best resistance to hand lotion?
For the American Market:
Hand lotion resistance is one of the most interesting aspects of durability testing. It is often a key requirement for many interior house paint markets such as gloss and semi gloss trim paints. When closing or opening doors and windows, hand lotion can build up and cause the coating to soften, blister, and eventually delaminate from substrate.
NeoCryl® XK-98, which utilizes surfactant free technology to produce a uniquely small particle size and is internally crosslinked exhibits superb hand lotion resistance. In the high gloss market for example, we, in the US, have evaluated NeoCryl® XK-98 in our suggested starting point formula WB 4137 at 150 g/L, with other similar, competitive formulations. In our comparative evaluations, a 1 hr and 24 hr spot test utilizing various hand lotions, NeoCryl® XK-98 exibited superior hand lotion resistance when evaluated for softening, loss of gloss, staining, and swelling. Much of this is attributed to NeoCryl® XK-98's unique compositional characteristics described above.
In addition, NeoCryl® XK-98, due to its core shell technology, requires small amounts of cosolvent for film formation which will give low VOC formulations demonstrating good surface hardness and early block resistance which can prove benificial in the interior house paint market.

Do the NeoPac Urethane- Acrylic copolymer dispersions always contain NMP?

Industrial Wood Coatings
Can you give me some guidelines in the formulation of Industrial Wood Coatings?
You will find many answers regarding the formulation of Industrial Wood Coatings, especially those based on NeoCryl® XK-15 and using NeoRez® R-1000 as matting agent, in the technical article "Facts in Formulating Industrial Wood Coatings" (Technology Chapter)
Joinery Coatings
I'm an architectural paint formulator and the many resins I've pigmented and tested don't have the required block resistance for joinery. What does DSM NeoResins+ offer in this area?
The design of a resin which exhibits good blocking properties when formulated for a architectural joinery application has been approached in two different ways.
NeoCryl® XK-90 is a 100% acrylic with an MFFT of 3C. NeoCryl® XK-90 is unique in its small particle morphology requiring low cosolvent demand that produces hard, block resistant, durable coatings. In pigmented coatings for joinery applications, face-to-face surface block is reduced significantly, while maintaining good flexibility for weather resistant properties. NeoCryl® XK-90 also has a wet adhesion promoter "built-in" for adhesion to the most difficult substrates like aged alkyd.
For the increasingly popular plastic window casings, DSM NeoResins+ has developed a new polymer with good block resistance and excellent adhesion to PVC . NeoCryl® XK-98 utilizes an internally cross-linked, core shell technology, which exhibits a balance of high and low Tg values in the outer/inner phases allowing for a low MFFT coating with good early block resistance properties. The self-crosslinking properties provide good chemical resistance, especially hand cream resistance.

Metal Coatings
What do you recommend for a rust converter formulation?
For the American Market:
WB-6032 based on Haloflex® 202 and tannic acid is an excellent rust converter formulation. Another option is WB-6028 and WB-6031 based on Haloflex® 202S and Atrust® RC-50. The most common choice of the formulations is Haloflex® 202/tannic acid. After wire brushing the loose rust away from the substrate, Formulation WB-6032 can be brushed onto the substrate and will turn the metal black, indicating conversion of the rust. The Haloflex® 202 will act in further protecting the metal by forming a water resistance coating. Formulations based on Haloflex® 202S/Atrust® RC-50 will do the same thing. The major differences in these formulations is that the Haloflex®202S/ Atrust® RC-50 can be topcoated with waterbased paints, while the Haloflex® 202/tannic acid cannot because of the water solubility of the tannic acid. Another difference is that the Haloflex® 202S/Atrust® RC-50 formulation can be reused after application, while the formulation based on Haloflex® 202/tannic acid will gel upon contamination of rust particles.
Perhaps the most notable difference is that the Haloflex® 202/tannic acid, upon application and drying, will turn very black, while the other formulations will turn varying shades of gray. All formulations, because of the presence of the two Haloflex® grades, will protect the coating from further quick deterioration.

What is the best resin recommendation for poorly prepared or greasy metals?
For the American and Asia-Pacific Markets:
NeoCryl® A-655 offers excellent adhesion to metal surfaces, which have questionable cleaning, residual oils, greases and drawing compounds. Also, NeoCryl® A-655 has adhesion to many types of plastics including “hard to wet” engineering grades. While NeoCryl® A-655 is not a film former on its own, it gives the chemist formulating latitude in terms of coalescing solvent choice based on desired film thickness and curing conditions (temperature and relative humidity) during drying process of coating.

Other applications
Are NeoPac® urethane acrylics only suitable for woodcoatings ?
No, the first range was mainly focussed on wood, however we see more and more applications coming up on plastics and metals. Here the main drivers are typical adhesion properties combined with things like improved resistances or scratch resistance.
