Other substrates
In the early beginnings, powder coatings were used only for applying a finishing coat on metals. The technology has made spectacular advances since then, and there are now powder coating resins that can be cured at low temperatures. As a result, the market for powder coating applications has expanded to include heat sensitive substrates such as plastics and wood. DSM is has developed resins that cure at low temperatures and therefore can be applied on some wooden substrates. This is made possible since radiation curing (UV or electron beam) allows the curing of powder at temperatures below 120°C. In collaboration with partners we have allocated resources to formulating powders that can even cure at temperatures below 100°C without compromising on durability or quality.
We achieve this through collaboration and partnerships within the powder coating manufacturing industry and working with wood product manufacturers. Thanks to lower temperature curing and development of a uniform density wood product, wood manufacturers and their customers are now able to powder coat a wide range of wood products, mainly MDF.
