Products
What’s the key to creating not just game-changing but life-changing products? At DSM, great science increasingly depends on our ability to develop and share knowledge and insight - both inside and outside our business. The result is a peerless portfolio of products that we believe make our planet a better place to live.
At first glance DSM’s principle fields of expertise - Life Sciences and Material Sciences – may not appear to have much in common.
But look again and you will see a growing convergence across our three principle business clusters of Nutrition, Health and Materials. We call it the ‘X factor’. In practice it means that DSM is more than just the sum of its parts – as evidenced by the fact that today we compete as the number one or number two in many of the Markets we serve.
Six million people can’t be wrong
Most importantly, the ‘X factor’ has real meaning and resonance for real people. For example, there are six million people walking the earth today with devices inside their bodies that contain key ingredients from DSM. We achieved this innovation by literallly taking our world-leading expertise in strong, lightweight, flexible materials like polymers and melding them with our knowledge of human cells and chemistry in Life Sciences. The result: Medical devices - for joints, hearts and even the brain - that interact with the body in previously unimagined ways.
This is just one example but it’s no means isolated. Even our latest hair care innovation Tulane® is the result of our expertise in resins. Who’d have thought that industrial coatings could lead to shinier, healthier hair?
DSM in health
Our contribution to the world’s health is without question. DSM is one of the world’s leading providers of high-quality custom manufacturing services to the global pharmaceutical industry, from R&D, to clinical trials, to commercial production and packaging. We’re also one of the major suppliers of active ingredients in bata lactam antibiotics and active ingredients: A staggering 500 million potentially life-saving treatments every year.
In biomedical, our polymers and resins are not just being used in biomedical devices such as artificial limbs and prosthetics, but for entirely new applications like pioneering drug delivery systems and medical design (stereolithography). Tomorrow our sights are set on life-changing new treatments like regenerative medicine.
DSM in nutrition
Feeding humans starts with nourishing animals and plants in the food chain. We do both. In crop protection we provide an increasingly green portfolio of custom manufacturing products and services in herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. In animal feed, our range of high-quality ingredients and additives – mainly vitamins and carotenoids – contribute to strong, healthy animals that produce better quality food with a lower carbon footprint.
Moving from four legs to two legs, our family of vitamins is taken by an estimated half-a-billion people every day. Not surprisingly we’re the world’s number one. Meanwhile our advanced ingredients –often based on enzymes instead of chemicals - make an important contribution to the world’s favorite food brands in dairy, baking, fruit juice, beer, wine and savory products.
DSM in materials
Our expertise in materials science – and especially polymers – is built on rock-solid foundations: We are the world’s largest manufacturer of Caprolactam, the principle raw material used to make most polymers including our family of engineering plastics. Our products are used in everything from cars to electronic devices to ski bindings. The common theme? Replacement of heavy, inflexible, expensive and environmentally unfriendly metals with a family of lighter, greener and ultimately smarter materials.
Our resin products are critical to modern life. We are the world’s leader in UV-curable coatings for fiber-optic cables with an 85% market share. Our resins are also used to coat everything from packaging and cans to textiles and leathers. They are used in the world’s biggest paint brands; while our composite resins help make everything from bridges and sewer pipes to gargantuan wind turbine blades.
Our Dyneema® polyethylene is 15 times stronger than steel yet far lighter. It’s waterproof, flame-retardant. It’s extremely flexible… it’s the world’s strongest fiber™.
