Sharing information about the safe use of chemicals
Every day, countless numbers of people outside DSM work with and use our products. Their safety is of paramount concern to us, which is why we make sure to provide full information about the safe use of our products.
We provide consumers and users with the information they need to be able to work safely with our products. For instance, we add special labels to products, and we include Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) which enable users to manage potential risks.
We’re also committed to meeting the requirements of three initiatives for consistent and transparent product information:
- The Globally Harmonized System. The GHS is a system for classifying and labeling chemical substances. This ensures that potentially dangerous products are described and labeled in a consistent manner throughout the world. DSM is fully committed to GHS requirements and timetables, thereby safeguarding the continued supply of its products.
- The Registration, Evaluation & Authorization of Chemicals. REACH regulations apply to substances produced in or imported into the European Union, and stipulate the creation of dossiers with information about the hazardous properties of a substance. At DSM, we run a peer-sharing program that ensures access to all available information on the properties and safe use of chemical substances. Before 2018, all substances that DSM produces and imports in the EU will be registered, including information on the safety of their intended use. Aligning all of our stakeholders – including our customers – is a complex process, but we are well on track.
- The Global Product Strategy. The GPS aims to improve safety for people working with hazardous substances across the globe. By 2018, a base set of information on all chemical substances will be available on the Internet.
