Creating a brighter future through engagement
At DSM, we feel we have an important role to play in tackling the issues of today. This is why we talk and work with a wide range of stakeholders.
Stakeholder engagement
We believe in engaging with everyone who wants to contribute to solving the world’s problems. It’s all part of harnessing bright thinking to create a brighter future. So we actively engage with a whole range of people and organizations, from employees, customers and suppliers to associations, governments, communities, industry peers, NGOs, and influential private individuals. In every case our aim is to:
- share thoughts and views;
- deepen our insights into political, societal and customer trends, drivers and needs;
- achieve advocacy goals in a focused manner by engaging in political and societal debates on relevant DSM topics, preferably jointly with key stakeholders;
- resolve issues, receive endorsement and build trust (through public-private partnerships and new business models); and
- be able to create more value for these stakeholders and, by implication, for DSM.
A strategy driver
This stakeholder engagement helps give direction to our strategy. Take the stakeholder mapping exercises we conducted. These revealed that the global megatrends of Global Shifts, Climate and Energy and Health and Wellness are overarching themes for DSM both in terms of societal and business impact. The result: we built these themes into our strategy. We are also actively engaged in dialogues that address our stakeholders’ needs regarding:
- Climate change
- Hidden hunger
- Food safety and quality
- Industrial (white) biotechnology
- Sustainable biomass
- Water management
- Community outreach
- Careers and employment
- Sustainable value chains
A values-based agenda
Our values play a large role in our agenda for making a positive contribution to the world of business and to society as a whole. DSM has a clear policy on Corporate Citizenship:
- As part of our License to Operate we encourage local initiatives to support the communities in which our sites are located.
- We support a few, targeted large-scale initiatives that draw on DSM expertise.
- We clearly rule out any payments or donations in kind to political parties or their institutions, agencies or representatives.
