We create new products, applications, processes and services that create
sustainable value for both our stakeholders and our company.
Science and technology are developing at a tremendous speed, creating the
technological base required for meeting the new consumer needs for
‘specialties’ in a creative, efficient and sustainable way. This convergence
of new societal needs and new technological possibilities forms the stage on
which DSM will build further on its existing strengths and develop new
capabilities.
DSM owns patents to around 2,500 inventions and adds another 300 to the total
every year. We actively manage some 500 trademarks worldwide. We expand our
knowledge base by participating in around 100 partnerships and collaborating
with faculties of 2,000 universities throughout the world. Every year we
invest 4 to 5% of sales revenues in research and development. Some of our
businesses spend twice as much.
DSM has developed new, cheaper and cleaner processes for antibiotics, food
ingredients, plastics, synthetic rubber, coating resins and coatings for
fiber-optic cables. DSM is responsible for highly successful products such as
the Dyneema® fiber, the engineering plastic Stanyl® and arachidonic acid. And
thanks to our genomics project, we now have a new technology platform that
enables us to introduce improved or new products faster and at lower cost.
