The name DSM is not an abbreviation and is therefore written without full
stops. The state-held coal company, which the Dutch government founded in
1902, used to be referred to in English as ‘Dutch State Mines’. When the
production of coal was ended in early 1973 and the company developed into one
of the world’s leading chemical companies, DSM was chosen as the new name,
inspired by the English version of the old name.

DSM wants to make it clear to a variety of target groups that the company
today is a very different one than it was just a few years ago. This has to do
with our strategy to transform into a worldwide specialty chemicals company.
DSM is constantly innovating its products and processes, always working from
the conviction that everything can be improved upon — they can be made more
environmentally-friendly, stronger, or less expensive. This is the central
theme of the Unlimited.DSM program.

Sports are about competition, ambition, training and focus, but also teamwork,
fun and of course winning. All of these elements apply to DSM as well.
Everyday we face strong competition and our mission is to be a top performer
in every market we compete. This is exactly what athletes are doing - their
aim matches ours. This is why, together with the Dutch Olympic Committee
NOC*NSF, we are constantly looking for innovations to improve performance
and safety.
Whereas the top sport segment offers a unique platform to show the innovative
power of DSM, our involvement goes well
beyond that. With the help of our focused and active sponsoring policy, we
hope to demonstrate an added social value by supporting people to engage in
sports activaties to improve health and vitality.
