1. What is DSM’s stance concerning safety and the environment?

Safety and the environment take top priority at DSM. Our company participates in the chemical industry’s worldwide Responsible Care Program and publishes an annual Sustainability Report about its performance in these fields. DSM is striving to create an accident-free working environment and invests continuously to reduce environmental impact.

2. What do the initials D-S-M stand for?

The name DSM is not an abbreviation and is therefore written without full stops. The state-held coal company, which the Dutch government founded in 1902, used to be referred to in English as ‘Dutch State Mines’. When the production of coal was ended in early 1973 and the company developed into one of the world’s leading chemical companies, DSM was chosen as the new name, inspired by the English version of the old name.

3. What does DSM hope to achieve with its Unlimited.DSM Program?

DSM wants to make it clear to a variety of target groups that the company today is a very different one than it was just a few years ago. This has to do with our strategy to transform into a worldwide specialty chemicals company. DSM is constantly innovating its products and processes, always working from the conviction that everything can be improved upon — they can be made more environmentally-friendly, stronger, or less expensive. This is the central theme of the Unlimited.DSM program.

4. Why is DSM engaged in sports and sport sponsoring?

Sports are about competition, ambition, training and focus, but also teamwork, fun and of course winning. All of these elements apply to DSM as well. Everyday we face strong competition and our mission is to be a top performer in every market we compete. This is exactly what athletes are doing - their aim matches ours. This is why, together with the Dutch Olympic Committee NOC*NSF, we are constantly looking for innovations to improve performance and safety.

Whereas the top sport segment offers a unique platform to show the innovative power of DSM, our involvement goes well beyond that. With the help of our focused and active sponsoring policy, we hope to demonstrate an added social value by supporting people to engage in sports activaties to improve health and vitality.

DSM creates innovative products and services in Life Sciences and Materials Sciences, contributing to the quality of life. DSM’s products and services are used globally in a wide range of markets and applications, supporting a healthier, more sustainable and enjoyable way of living

  • The business groups that fall under Nutrition develop products for the food industry.
  • The business groups that fall under Pharma develop products for the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Business groups within Performance Materials create high-quality materials such as UV-coatings for optical fibers, engineering plastics, and resins for dry and wet paints and for the production of pipes, tanks and containers.
  • The business group that falls under Polymer Intermediates is involved in the production of fiber feedstock.
  • The business groups that fall under Base Chemicals and Materials are involved in the production of elastomers, melamine, and fertilizers.

The Managing Board consists of: Feike Sijbesma (chairman), Jan Zuidam, Nico Gerardu, Rolf-Dieter Schwalb and Stephan B. Tanda.

The Supervisory Board consists of: Cornelius A.J. Herkströter RA (chairman), Cees van Woudenberg, Ewald Kist, Pierre Hochuli, Claudio Sonder, Tom de Swaan and Louise Gunning-Schepers.
