The innovative Partner in Sport - DSM and NOC*NSF

DSM and the Dutch Olympic Committee/Dutch Sports Federation ( NOC*NSF) have been ‘Partners in Sport’ since 2001. The Olympic philosophy, the tremendous ambition displayed by Olympic athletes and in particular their great passion very much appeal to DSM. NOC*NSF is aiming for the maximum possible result: going for medals, using the best possible resources. DSM is actively contributing to the achievement of this goal.

Of course, it is ultimately up to the individual athletes to deliver a top-level performance. An excellent physical condition, based on well-balanced nutrition, is therefore crucial. At the same time, the best high-tech materials are increasingly making the difference between victory and defeat.

That is why DSM, as innovation partner, does more than just provide financial support. Together with NOC*NSF we are developing new products in the field of nutrition and performance materials exclusively for the Dutch Olympic team, to enable them to deliver top-level performances.

These innovations are being developed in close collaboration with specialists from NOC*NSF, coaches, athletes and the Olympic support team. The combination of DSM’s knowledge and know-how in the fields of life sciences and materials sciences with NOC*NSF’s experience in sports represents the ultimate win-win situation for creating new breakthrough innovations.

Athens 2004 & Turin 2006
During the Athens 2004 Olympics, the world saw the introduction of the first products to emerge from this partnership: the PeptoPro® energy and recovery drink, heat-regulating rowing garments and a revolutionary rowing helmet. During the Turin Winter Olympics in 2006 DSM came up with innovations in bobsleighs, including shock absorbers that maintain their dampening properties at a range of different temperatures.

The Road to Beijing 2008
In the run-up to Beijing 2008, too, DSM is supporting the Dutch athletes. DSM’s Road to Beijing in fact started as early as June 2005, when a number of innovation projects were defined with the aim of supporting the athletes on their way to success at the 2008 Olympics. Since then, DSM people from various business groups have been working on the development of new products and concepts, a number of which are now being tested by Dutch Olympic team members and candidates.

In developing products for the Beijing Olympics, DSM is paying special attention to the tough climate conditions in this region: the heat and the high humidity can lead to dehydration, a weakened immune system and poor recovery. The sports innovations that DSM has developed for the Dutch Olympic athletes have been grouped in the DSM Unlimited Sports Center. In the run-up to Beijing these innovations will be presented to the public in a number of media updates.

Mascot Dutch Olympic Team
On 17 March 2008 the official mascot of the Dutch Olympic and Paralympic Team was presented during the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. With this unique mascot NOC*NSF wants to raise the Olympic 'fever' among the public in the Netherlands, and create support for the athletes that will participate in the Beijing Summer Games.
