DSM Purchasing

Our organization
Purchasing is a globally operating functional group, aiming at realizing a sustainable competitive advantage for DSM. Professionalism in Purchasing and alignment with the requirements of the DSM business groups are important principles. Our Purchasing professionals create added value supported by best-in-class standard processes, by efficient use of systems and highly innovative sourcing methods such as the Strategic Sourcing Methodology. The Chief Purchasing Officer leads the Purchasing function.

Purchasing is a global organization that consists of a central DSM Sourcing structure and a Business Group Sourcing structure. Our matrix organization aims at world-wide cooperation between all Purchasing employees in order to realize global transparency in spend, better knowledge sharing, stronger leverage and above all, maximum synergy and results. Purchasing covers essentially all of DSM’s spend areas:

  • Chemicals & Utilities, which are the majority of the necessary building blocks for the vast range of DSM products
  • Indirect Goods & Services which cover the most diverse range of purchasing needs for DSM that are not directly processed in our products

Our suppliers
Our selection criteria for suppliers include, but are not limited to the following capabilities:

  • Business commitment: the level of strategic alignment, resource allocation, innovation and commitment to price and cost reduction
  • Security of supply: whether a supplier has delivered on time and has put supply assurance systems in place
  • Quality assurance: which includes the quality performance of products and services and the documentation supplied, but also the response to non-performance
  • Sustainability: which includes compliance with a code of conduct, but also good corporate citizenship

We work with our suppliers to continuously improve our performance by:

  • Conducting regular supplier performance evaluations
  • Our Supplier development program, in which we aim to develop the supplier’s true strategic capability
  • Managing key supplier relationships to better utilize the true capabilities of our most important suppliers
  • Expecting all suppliers to conduct their activities in accordance with our General Purchase Conditions (PDF: 52 Kb) and Code of Conduct

We see our role in extending the value chain to our suppliers to contribute to value creation in the areas of innovation, business growth, cash management, business intelligence, risk management and sustainability.

Valuable partnerships, respect for people and good corporate citizenship are of utmost importance to DSM. When considering a business partnership, we base our choice of partner not only on economic considerations, but also on the prospective partner’s track record in the field of safety, health and environmental management and sustainable development.

Purchasing takes full responsibility for implementing and continuously improving a sustainable procurement policy for DSM to optimize the environmental, economic and social impacts of its purchasing and consumption decisions on the long term.
