Chemical name: Ammonia,
Anhydrous Ammonia
UN Number: 1005
Ammonia
is at ambient temperature and pressure a colorless gas with a very pungent
odor. It must be stored and transported under pressure and/or at low
temperature. The gas is strongly irritant/corrosive to the skin, eyes and
respiratory tract and has toxic properties.
Ammonia gas is
very soluble in water with a strong heat evolution. Ammonia gas condenses into
a colorless liquid when cooled and compressed. The liquid can cause severe
cold burns on contact with the skin.
Ammonia is produced by
direct combination of hydrogen and nitrogen under high pressure and in the
presence of a catalyst. The main raw materials in the ammonia production are
natural gas and air.
More than 100 million tons of ammonia is
produced per year. DSM Agro produces 1 million tons of ammonia in Geleen (NL)
in 2 separate factories. This Ammonia is used in soil fertilization and
technical application like the production of polymer building blocks (
Caprolactam, Melamine and Acrylonitrile ) and the production of (bio)organic
amines and amino acids. Substantial volumes of ammonia are used in production
of acrylic fibers, nylon-6, nylon-66 and amines which have numerous technical
end uses.
DSM Agro is a reliable and competitive supplier of
ammonia via Railcars and Tank cars from our Geleen storage and loading
facility towards the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the north of France.
Delivery reliability is our means to assure satisfied customers.
