The aim of the DSM Performance Materials Award is to reward outstanding contributions to innovative research in the materials sciences by established scientists anywhere in the world. The award – which carries a cash prize of EUR 50,000 – is granted every two years. DSM has entered into a partnership with IUPAC, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, for cooperation on this award.
Nomination
Nominations are invited via an open, public call for nomination announced in relevant journals. The award is open to scientists who have made major contributions to fundamental or applied research in the materials sciences and whose work has significantly advanced the world’s understanding and knowledge of key questions in a specific field. A specific field is chosen for each award year and specified in the call for nominations.
Judging
An international judging committee – made up of two members representing IUPAC and two independent members and chaired by DSM’s CTO – reviews the nominations and selects the winner. The judging procedure and the names of the members of the judging committee are announced on this website.
Award presentation
The award is presented at the IUPAC Macro World Polymer Congress, which takes place every two years. A requirement of the award is that the recipient has to be personally present at the presentation ceremony held during the congress to accept the award and give an award lecture.
