REACH, the European Regulation for Registration, E valuation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, came into force on June 1, 2007.

All new and 'existing' substances produced in or imported into the EU in quantities above 1 ton/annum will need to be registered.

The first step of the REACH process is to submit lists of ‘existing’ chemical substances requiring registration - the pre-registration phase - and to collate existing (animal) test data. The aim of this pre-registration is to avoid duplicating animal test work that may already exist. 

Pre-registration offers the opportunity to register at a later stage and will take place within a time frame of 6 months: it starts on June 1, 2008 and will end on December 1, 2008.
