DSM PTG, part of DSM Biomedical, a global leader in biomedical materials,
today announced the company’s participation in the upcoming 2009 International
Medical Devices Conference & Expo (IMD EXPO). Dedicated to medical devices
design, engineering, material selections and manufacturing, the 2009 IMD EXPO
will bring together the world’s leaders in engineering and technology to
discuss medical devices and applications for patient care. It is being held
September 14-15, 2009 at the Hotel Marriott Downtown in San Jose, California.
Nelson Cooke, Ph.D., DSM PTG’s business development manager, will lead
sessions and participate in discussions focused on important issues in the
medical device industry. Cooke will chair the September 15th session,
“Advances in Materials Complementing Device Design,” and will co-chair a
second session that same day titled “Medical Device Design and Development.”
“I am honored to be part of a conference that brings together experts
from all over the globe to discuss advances in medical devices, medical
materials, processes and drug delivery systems,” said Nelson Cooke. “
We have an extremely impressive line-up of speakers, panelists and exhibitors,
all of whom bring unique and exciting ideas to the table. This year’s
conference and expo promises to be exceptional.”
Other experts from DSM PTG who will be speaking or participating in panel
discussions include:
Bob Ward; Shanger Wang, Ph.D; James Parakka; Ph.D; and Robert L. Jones, D.Sc.
Topics for discussion will include the use of polymer surface activity and
self assembly in medical devices, polymers providing self-assembling
antimicrobial surface, degradation behavior of high strength bioabsorbable
polyurethanes, surface chemical control and analysis of biomedical materials,
and UHMWPE via macromolecular design.

About DSM Biomedical
DSM Biomedical develops novel
materials-based solutions to meet the present and future needs of the medical
device and pharmaceutical industries. Building on the expertise and strengths
of DSM and its acquisition of DSM PTG (formerly The Polymer Technology Group),
the company's product portfolio includes coatings, drug delivery platforms and
a wide range of biomedical materials for use in short- and long-term
implantable medical devices. Key product brands include Bionate® TPU and
CarboSil® TSPU, two of the most extensively tested biomedical polymers ever
developed. Both polymers have excellent biostability, high strength and
abrasion resistance, making them candidate materials for load-bearing
orthopedic implants. ComfortCoat™ hydrophilic and antimicrobial coating
technology for catheters, guidewires and stent delivery systems; and Dyneema
Purity®, a high-performance polyethylene fiber technology developed
specifically for use in medical applications, such as orthopedic implants. The
company also markets the Trancerta™ Drug Delivery approach, which is based on
DSM's core strengths in polymers combined with its extensive in-house library
of synthesis methods, formulation and processing techniques. For more
