Licensing Model Continues to Drive Partnerships and Innovation in Diverse Medical Fields
DSM Biomedical, a global leader in biomedical materials science, and its Berkeley based operation, DSM PTG, today announced the company has entered into six multi-year licensing agreements with global medical device manufacturers in the Orthopedic, Cardiovascular, Vascular and Urology fields in this year alone. Continuing the company’s successful track record, having also signed nine new license agreements in 2009, DSM Biomedical has a history of partnering with medical device companies to develop new and innovative products that incorporate novel materials and technologies.
The six new agreements allow DSM Biomedical to work in conjunction with leading medical device manufacturers throughout the various phases of development, prototyping, manufacturing and processing of product commercialization to collectively create innovative products that serve the medical community and their patients. Specifically, these medical device companies will be in a position to leverage the track record of DSM Biomedical’s advanced biomedical materials, including Bionate® PCU, CarboSil® TSPCU and ComfortCoat® medical coatings in applications such as total disk replacement, spinal stabilization, continuous glucose monitoring, cardiac rhythm management, neurostimulation, catheters and heart assist devices.
“DSM Biomedical’s business model has proven to be very successful as evidenced by the expansion of the number of licensees and our collaborative relationships with medical device manufacturers looking to accelerate their commercialization efforts,” said Rob Evans, vice president of Global Marketing and Sales, DSM PTG. “What DSM Biomedical brings to the table is reputation and a successful track record which translates into speed to market. No biomedical materials company has the experience and breadth of portfolio that DSM Biomedical offers.”
In the spirit of open innovation, DSM Biomedical actively explores licensing opportunities, setting up business models that are typical of knowledge-based rather than production-based businesses, including the licensing of intellectual property. Working with medical device and biopharmaceutical manufacturers in the United States and Europe, in various fields including orthopedics, ophthalmics, cardiovascular, vascular and urology, DSM Biomedical is a trusted partner with its quality system certified to the ISO 9001 and/or ISO 13845 standards, providing its partners with an expertise in quality and regulatory compliance.
About DSM Biomedical
DSM Biomedical develops novel materials-based solutions to meet the present and future needs of the medical device and biopharmaceutical industries. Building on the expertise and strengths of DSM and its acquisition of The Polymer Technology Group, which is now known as DSM PTG, the company’s product portfolio includes coatings, drug delivery platforms and a wide range of biomedical materials for use in short- and long-term implantable medical devices. Key product brands include Bionate® PCU and CarboSil® TSPCU, two of the most extensively tested biomedical polymers ever developed. Both polymers have excellent biostability, high strength and abrasion resistance, making them candidate materials for load-bearing orthopedic implants. ComfortCoat® hydrophilic and antimicrobial coating technology for catheters, guidewires and stent delivery systems; and Dyneema Purity®, a high-performance polyethylene fiber technology developed specifically for use in medical applications, such as orthopedic implants. The company also markets the Trancerta™ family of bioresorbable materials for drug delivery. This portfolio is based on DSM’s core strengths in materials science combined with its extensive in-house library of synthesis methods, formulation and processing techniques.
