BioSpan® segmented polyurethane

BioSpan® Segmented Polyether Urethane (SPU) is a critical biomedical polymer used in the majority of clinical ventricular assist devices and artificial heart cases worldwide. BioSpan® simultaneously exhibits an impressive combination of physical and mechanical properties together with biological compatibility.

You can use BioSpan® SPU for device components that require high strength, flexibility and fatigue resistance. By incorporating Surface Modifying End Groups (SME®) you can obtain desirable surface properties. BioSpan® SPU incorporates silicone into the soft segment, thus delivering the biocompatibility and stability of silicone to an extremely soft biomaterial with unique bulk properties.

Benefits
  • Excellent flex life
  • Mechanical strength
  • Hydrolytic stability
  • Elasticity
  • Biocompatible
  • Available with various Surface Modifying End Groups®
  • FDA Master File

Applications
  • Current applications:
Long term implants, such as ventricular assist devices, catheters and stents, where metal oxide-induced oxidation is a potential degradation mechanism.
  • Customized applications:
We also offer experimental grades and variations of BioSpan® with a variety of bulk and surface properties to satisfy specific requirements.

BioSpan® is a registered trademark of DSM and is a brand marketed by DSM PTG, formerly the Polymer Technology Group (PDF: 248 Kb).
