Developmental materials: Thermoplastic elastomers

DSM’s ThermoPlastic Elastomers (TPE) are novel thermoplastic elastomers for medical use, under evaluation for chronic implantation. With over 10 years of clinical history, block co-polyesters have a proven track record as an implantable material.

Our TPE is a family of elastomers combining the best properties of rubber in an easily processable, biocompatible co-polyester. These co-polyesters combine the strength, processing characteristics and design flexibility of thermoplastics with the performance of thermoset elastomers. As thermoplastics, they do not require vulcanization or plasticizers to obtain their optimal properties.

Benefits
  • Exceptional flexibility and available in several hardnesses, our TPE can replace metals, thermoplastics and rubbers such as silicone
  • Resistant to fatigue, creep and constant wear and abrasion
  • Excellent compression set
  • Processing flexibility (extrusion, injection molding and blow molding) and design freedom
  • Two-component molding: our TPE can be over-molded on other plastics or metals
  • Biocompatibility and safety are demonstrated in specific USP VI and ISO 10993 tests

Applications
  • Customized applications:Delivering excellent solutions to specific needs takes more than just materials. Every application is unique, so getting the right results often demands customized application support. Contact us to discuss specific needs and requirements.
