Guangyuan, Sichuan Province, June 1, 2010 — DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company today declares that DSM Hope Primary School has been officially completed and is ready to be put into use; it also announces the launch of a series of corporate social responsibility activities under the title- Rainbow. DSM, using its abilities in life sciences and materials sciences, will contribute to the local work of school building, education of students, promotion of nutrition and other forms of sustainable development.
DSM Hope Primary School, located in Qiaoxi Township, Cangxi County, has been jointly funded by DSM China (through its China Youth Development Foundation) and the Guangyuan Municipal Government. Leaders of China Youth Development Foundation, Guangyuan Municipal Government; Cangxi County Government ; Director of DSM Resins Asia Mr Stephan Dusault; General Manger Xie Qiang of Wuxi NutriRice Co. Ltd, a company co-funded by DSM; and representatives of the staff of DSM China all attended the completion ceremony and the richly meaningful initiation ceremony of the Rainbow Social Responsibility Program. Mr Tu Meng said eloquently at the ceremony: “As Liang Qichao said, if the youth of the country are wise, the country will be wise; if the youth of the country are full of energy, the country will be powerful. We hope there will be more enterprises joining DSM in the Hope Project, to help create a better, more healthy environment for life and education; to help develop themselves; and to contribute to China’s education, which is key to the sustainable development of the Chinese economy and society.”
The Rainbow of DSM: Using its abilities to repay society
In China, DSM has conducted social responsibility activities wherever it sets foot. From June 1, 2010, these social responsibility activities take the collective name Rainbow. Unlike other enterprises participating in activities for the public good, DSM not only provides funds for constructing the Hope Primary Schools, it is also at pains to emphasize that the company aims to actively use its abilities in life sciences and materials sciences to repay society, and specifically to help promote the healthy development of the kids of the Hope Primary School.
As a leader in the nutrition and vitamin industry, Wuxi NutriRice Co. Ltd. together with its business partner Sichuan Yanfeng Science & Technology company will donate 16.5 tons of enriched rice which contained NutriRice® to the Children of DSM Hope Primary School to supplement their staple food with the vitamins necessary for healthy development of body and brain, and also bolster their immune systems. In addition, in the newly built school cafeteria, DSM has put up posters to educate the children about nutrition, using popular cartoon characters to attract them and inform them about the vitamins contained in vegetables, fruits and meat and their effect on the human body, and furthermore to remind the children to make sure they eat a nutritionally balanced meal. These posters not only enrich the children’s nutritional knowledge, they also promote healthy growth in an interesting and happy environment.
“Though the earthquake showed no mercy, our fellow countrymen are always ready to give us their helping hands,” says Mr Ma Chengjun, Headmaster of DSM Hope Primary School of Qiaoxi Township. “Thanks to DSM and the support and care of different levels of government, the school buildings have been satisfactorily rebuilt, and more care and help, including that of DSM and all its employees, is being provided for our children. Their living and educational environment has been greatly improved; we all feel deeply grateful for their benevolence, and in return for their help, we will work harder to contribute to building the quality of our country’s basic education. The students will also study with a stronger drive and motivation, and try their best to turn themselves into pillars supporting the China of the future.
The Rainbow: a bridge of communication helping us strive and grow together to achieve our dreams
Mr Jiang Weiming, DSM China President, remarked: “The launch of the DSM Rainbow Program is proof that we persist as ever in rewarding society and supporting educational development while pursuing our own sustainable development. Hereafter, we will continue to focus on the needs of the schools and children and promote educational aid activities in a planned and organised way, as well as encourage our staff to have close communication with the kids by visiting the Hope Primary School. While they are helping the children, the staff of DSM will also try to enrich and improve themselves, and study and grow through contact with them.”
“What can we do for the kids in DSM Hope Primary School?” This is what the DSM staff constantly consider. The Rainbow embodies the dreams of all DSM staff, and has become a bridge allowing them to communicate with the students of the DSM Hope Primary School.
After the completion ceremony, DSM staff representatives had fun interacting with the kids in the Hope Primary School. Mr Stephan Dusault, Director of DSM Resins Asia, acted as a PE teacher and taught the students to play European street football. Through the game, the students also picked up a lot of English football expressions. Teaching through lively activity like this is bound to enable the students to learn faster and leave a deeper impression. In the science lab, staff members from the DSM R&D centre gave a chemistry lesson to students to help them experience the magic of chemical reactions. DSM staff members who were unable to come nonetheless donated books and sports equipment such as badminton racquets, table tennis balls and shuttlecocks. DSM hopes the kids will enjoy happy and healthy growth and that their rainbow dreams will come true.

DSM has carried out various kinds of social responsibility activities all over China. From June 1, 2010, all these activities have one uniform name: Rainbow. This shows that DSM has taken advantage of its abilities in life sciences and materials sciences to make a commitment to China’s sustainable development.
Since 2003, DSM China has carried out many social responsibility activities in aspects such as education, community, environment and society. For instance, in 2006 DSM provided 100,000 bicycle reflectors for 50,000 local students, to increase their cycling safety at night. In 2008, DSM helped build two DSM Hope Primary Schools after the Wenchuan earthquake; DSM also donated money to build Hope Libraries in Liaocheng, Shandong Province and Hengyang, Hunan Province; and set up the DSM Zhangjiakou Scholarship in Hebei North University’s Medical School. In 2008, DSM donated nutritional rice from the NutriRice Company to Beijing Dandelion School to help eliminate problems of malnutrition and micro-nutrient deficiency among the students.
NutriRice: innovative nutrition-intensifying rice
DSM and Buhler Group work together to develop an effective and solid solution for intensifying rice – NutriRice. Traditional rice is grinded into powder and mixed with vitamins and mineral substances, then remade into rice grains again, thus avoiding the loss of vitamins and mineral substances. Furthermore, this new rice is almost identical to traditional rice in both appearance and taste.
NutriRice, produced by Wuxi NutriRice Co., Ltd, a joint venture co-invested in by DSM Group and Buhler Group, won the 2008 Business Award for Innovation in Nutrition, awarded by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.
Wuxi NutriRice Co., Ltd also actively participates in the Multi-intensifying Food Comprehensive Nutrient Intervention Project for students from schools for migrant workers’ children, a project initiated by the Food Fortification Office (FFO) of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and has ben donating enriched rice containing nutrient rice grains (NutriRice) for free to pilot school Beijing Dandelion Migrant Workers’ Children School for two years, to help improve the overall nutritional status of the students at this school. Wuxi NutriRice Co., Ltd also actively assists the Disease Control and Prevention Center in nutritional intervention research to promote the development of public nutrition in China.
