July, 2009 – Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences
company, has published its 2008 DSM China Sustainability Report. This is the
second consecutive year that DSM has published the annual sustainability
report in China.
In light of DSM’s 3P “People, Planet, Profit” sustainability principle, the
2008 DSM China Report presents the company’s achievements in the field of
sustainability in China, with a global backdrop, during the year under review.
It also outlines sustainability goals for the future, and reports on ongoing
stakeholder engagement initiatives, one of which aims to further increase this
report’s transparency. Apart from that, this report also reports DSM’s
activities in the context of the four global trends to which our
sustainability strategy responds: Climate and Energy, Health and Wellness,
Functionality and Performance and Emerging Economies.
The 2008 DSM China Sustainability Report focuses on the following three topics:
Planet: Four of the seven DSM China environmental targets for 2010 have
already been met. The discharge of COD (oxidizable organic compounds) in waste
water has been greatly reduced, to 93% of the 2005 amount, and dust to 86%.
SO2 discharge, meanwhile, is 44% less than in 2005. Landfilling of
non-hazardous waste has been reduced by 36%.
Profit: Both DSM global and DSM China achieved a record year despite the
impact of the global economic downturn during the last quarter of 2008. China
continues its strong growth, increasing its 2008 full-year sales in China by
about 20% to USD 1.151 billion. DSM remains fully committed to continued
investment in innovation and will continue to invest in growth businesses.
People: DSM made great progress in increasing the diversity of the employee
base in 2008, introducing a number of new systems designed to equip their
people in China for meeting the challenges of a changing world. These new
systems include a new approach to career management, new learning and
development architecture and a new global internal vacancy system.
DSM has been named the worldwide sustainability leader in the chemical
business. For the fifth year in a row, in 2008 DSM retained its listing in the
top rank of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the chemical sector.
In 2008, DSM China Campus, where the DSM China Regional Headquarters and R&D
Center are located, was declared one of the first LEED (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design) Gold-certified buildings in China. Meanwhile, DSM
was given the Best Case Award in China’s “2008 CBN Corporate Social
Responsibility Ranking”. These achievements mark our global leadership among
chemical companies and demonstrate our efforts and achievements in sustainable
development and building a transparent reporting system.
Dr Weiming Jiang, President of DSM China, adds:”The current economic situation
cannot disperse our long-term focus on the global trend we are facing. We
won’t change our focus on the assurance of a sustainable energy supply, the
fight against climate change and a balanced food supply to help increase the
nutrition level of human beings throughout the world. As shown in our business
approach last year, DSM and our employees are staying the course in our
commitment to sustainable development and meeting change. The 2008 China
report has fully convinced us that we are on the right track and clearly
reconfirms our position in this changing world. We hope to encourage more and
more companies in China to contribute their efforts to sustainable development
and to share experiences with each other to build a better world all
together.”
