Alkyd Emulsions and Polyurethane Dispersions for a greener future

The shift from solvent borne to waterborne paints and lacquers is gaining momentum as the paint industry demonstrate commitment to the environment by converting large parts of their product range to water based paints.

European and national legislation is putting mounting pressure on the coatings industry to reduce VOCs, but end-users still expect good product performance.  As an industry leader, DSM Coating Resins is responding to this challenge with the development of new water borne products (Uradil, Urabrid and Halwedrol). Uradil builds on a strong tradition of product innovation. It was DSM Coating Resins who pioneered water dilutable Uradil alkyd emulsions over 30 years ago and the range is continually being extended and improved.

Alkyd Emulsions

Alkyd emulsions are now more popular than ever before. The move towards more environmentally friendly and healthier paints is not only the result of legislative directives, but it is also due to continuing improvements in the performance of the products. This ongoing development program underscores the commitment of DSM Coating Resins to sustainable entrepreneurship.

The current range of Uradil products covers short, medium and long oil alkyd emulsions, materials which we are producing in larger volumes to meet the increased market demand.

For a significant part of the market a straight alkyd emulsion will give the required paint properties; however many customers also mix our alkyd emulsions with polymer dispersions to improve specific properties such as drying speed and yellowing resistance. This can impair other properties such as gloss levels. DSM Coating Resins developed Urabrid as a new hybrid system to meet these needs.

In 2004 DSM Coating Resins acquired the business of HAL and got very interesting and high performing polyurethane dispersions (Halwedrol) for decorative and industrial applications (oxidative drying types, urethane dispersions for UV-light curing coatings, waterborne 2pack lacquers and self cross linking products). The total product overview you will find in the enclosed selector guide.

New developments are, in part, technology push, but are also driven by a strong market pull. In close cooperation with our customers we will continue to develop sustainable, durable products with minimal impact to the environment.
