Automotive and Plastic Coating Resins

The car industry uses multi-layered coating systems. A solid colour coating has three layers: a cathodic electrocoat, a primer surfacer and a topcoat. Metallic colours have four coating layers: a cathodic electrocoat, a primer surfacer, a metallic basecoat and a clearcoat. The basecoat (metallic, solid colour) and direct gloss topcoat are mostly polyester based, whereas the clearcoat is mostly acrylic based. Modern primer surfacers are predominantly based on polyester/melamine with blocked isocyanate.

Plastic coatings are widely used in the automotive, audio/video, domestic components and computer industries. Over the last few years the use of plastics in the automotive industry has increased tremendously. DSM is a major supplier of polymers and compounds to this industry. Several types of resins are used in general industry, automotive, transportation and plastic coatings.

Automotive coatings are based on a broad range of resins.The type of resin used depends on the requirements and applications, such as primer surfacer, metallic basecoat, topcoat and clearcoat. Both single and two pack coatings are used.

Transportation coatings (use on trains, commercial vehicles, buses and for car repair) mainly use air drying chain stopped alkyds, acrylics and polyesters. As with automotive coatings, both single and two pack coatings are used. DSM Coatings Resins supplies the following types of resins:

We focus our new product developments on waterborne and higher solids resins. In addition, we are continuously developing new powder coating resins to update our already extensive powder resin portfolio. Powder coatings are increasingly replacing low solids, solvent based products (stoving types), for example in primers, fillers and appliance coatings.
