Electrical properties: Akulon polyamides are good insulators

Akulon exhibits high levels of surface and volume resistivity, dielectric strength, and comparative tracking resistance, comparable to other engineering plastics.

The exact levels of these properties depend on the specific grade, temperature, and moisture content. At temperatures above 100°C, surface and volume resistivity and dielectric strength of Akulon demonstrate a strong reduction whereas polyesters are less affected. In many cases, these levels remain high enough to fulfill critical application requirements. Combined with its high peak temperature resistance and excellent toughness, this makes Akulon an excellent option for electrical and electronical connectors, circuit breaker housings, electromotor parts, bobbins and switches.

For electrical applications, there are Akulon grades available with improved flame retardant behavior. These flame retardant grades are tailored to provide the optimal balance of electrical, mechanical, and flammability performance.

Halogen free Akulon grades offer higher CTI values compared to halogen containing grades or red phosphorous based PA66 materials. The CTI of various Akulon grades include:

UF                     600 V
GF                   > 500 V
FR halogen       > 400 V
FR non-halogen   600 V
