Structural analysis

FEA is another key engineering support area that DSM offers that makes it possible to answer many questions before prototype parts are made. Linear, non-linear, as well as modal analyses are common analyses performed for automotive customers. Any of these analyses are commonly used to validate new designs as well as troubleshoot current designs.

DSM uses Abaqus®, LS-Dyna® and OptiStruct®, which are mainstream FEA software codes offering a variety of capabilities. Each has its own unique advantages including structural optimization of mechanical structures however, OptiStruct is an obvious favorite for developing quick and robust concepts and for improvements throughout the entire design phase.

DSM has been using Altair OptiStruct® software for nearly 10 years. Components that have been optimized include accelerator pedals and brackets, manifolds, covers and shrouds, tension supports and guides, fans, electrical/electronic enclosures, office chairs, hand truck frames, wheel chair wheels and seats, gears, and many metal replacement projects.

The value to you is a combination of performance, reduced cost and weight, and time-to-market

Recent advances in OptiStruct include considerations for molding (draw direction constraints) and multi-component analysis (nonlinear contact). In addition, constraint functions include: compliance, frequency, volume, mass, moments of inertia, center of gravity, displacements, buckling factor, stresses, strains, composite failure, forces, and any function listed in the responses. Topology, topography, size, and shape optimization are available and can be combined in a general design problem.
