WEEE August 2005 directive: Implications for ESL manufacturers

•   Where bromine containing flame retardant systems are used to meet flammability, organizing separate waste streams to meet the WEEE directive will increase the cost of the produced ESL part.

•   DSM can advise on solutions to reduce the costs of implementing this directive

•   We are developing alternative halogen-free systems to give the required flammability performance in materials typically used for this application.

Design and power influence material choice

ESL’s generate heat though at a much lower level than incandescent or discharge lights. The critical point is where the glass tube enters the base. Compact designs lead to high temperatures, requiring Arnite® PBT. For new lights generating up to 300W equivalent lighting, higher temperatures can be experienced and Arnite® PET is the preferred solution.

For larger and low powered designs, the dimensional stability of Xantar® is an optimal solution
