DSM Engineering Plastics introduces new high performance grade of STANYL® for under the bonnet applications.

Royal DSM N.V. today announces that it will expand its engineering plastics compounding capacity at the site in Jiangyin (China). The investment will increase the capacity of the compounding plant by 50% and the added capacity will be operational towards the end of 2008. This comes as an enhancement to DSM’s existing capacity, which was doubled in 2006 with the opening of this new greenfield site.

Due to increasing cost of raw materials, energy and transportation costs, DSM Engineering Plastics has decided to increase prices for Arnite® PBT by at least $0.12 per pound and Arnitel® TPE materials by at least $0.15 per pound in the US, Canada and Mexico. This increase will take effect as of December 1, 2007.

DSM Engineering Plastics has absorbed the impact of significant cost increases over an extended period of time. However, the magnitude of on-going cost increases for raw materials, energy, transportation and logistics make product price increases unavoidable. In order for DSM to achieve a suitable return on investments in technology and innovation it is necessary to off-set some of these cost increases through price rises.

DSM Engineering Plastics today announced that its XANTAR® C CE 407 resin allows NedTrain, a provider of train car maintenance and overhaul services, to supply state-of-the-art cladding systems for walls and ceilings in passenger coaches.

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced Xantar® C (PC/ABS) for the manufacture of lighting components. The Xantar® C material is now being used for the production of end caps for Centura 2, an important new range of luminaires from Philips.

Stanyl®, a high-performance polyamide 46 (PA46) resin from DSM Engineering Plastics, was chosen for the production of tumble valve bearings for the latest generation of the V6 and V8 engines of a high value german car producer.

In an effort to offset the escalating cost of raw materials, energy and transportation costs, DSM Engineering Plastics will increase prices for Akulon® and Nylatron® polyamide 6 and 66 materials by $0.10 lb. in the US, Canada and Mexico. This increase will take effect as of September 1, 2007.

Weight reduction is vital in automotive in order to help reduce fuel consumption and emission levels to meet today's and future standards. One way to reduce weight in a car is to design applications as much as possible in plastics instead of in metal. Skymark Performance Films Limited (Scunthorpe, U.K.), employs Arnitel® VT thermoplastic ether ester block copolymer elastomer (TEE-E) film technology materials from DSM Engineering Plastics, in Skymark’s breathable SKYAIR® and SKYAIR® XT membranes.

In a recent clean air duct application where Arnitel® PB 582-H from DSM Engineering Plastics replaced rubber, the move yielded for a a weight reduction of 50% and cycle time reduction of 50% compared to rubber, which resulted in 0.6 Euro/part processing saving and a 0.8 Euro/part fuel saving (a total annual saving of 70.000 Euro for 50.000 parts).

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced Akulon XP, a high productivity grade of PA6 for film applications. Akulon XP offers a broader processing window leading to more flexibility and more uniform thickness distribution in cast film, more melt strength and better parison stability leading to optimized LDPE/LLDPE ratio in multi-layer films without sacrificing the mechanical properties, more shear thinning than with standard PA6 enabling thus higher coating velocities possible and still absolutely gel free.

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced Arnitel VT for the manufacture of breathable films. Arnitel Vapor Transmission films are ideally suited for roofing applications, textile applications and plasters and for medical gowns and drapes.

Royal DSM N.V. (DSM), the world’s leading supplier of nutritional and pharma ingredients, performance materials and industrial chemicals, today announces that it will invest in a new plant for producing engineering plastics compounds in India, in the Ranjangaon MIDC industrial zone about 60 km from Pune. The new site will triple the capacity for the production of Akulon® PA6, Arnite® PBT and PET and Stanyl® PA46 in India. These materials are used in manufacturing molded components for the automotive, electrical and electronics, consumer and industrial segments.

Hitachi Automotive Systems Europe, Ltd., has selected a reinforced Arnite�� polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) blend from DSM Engineering Plastics for injection moulded mass airflow sensor body destined for Audi engines. Arnite TV4 261 30% glass reinforced grade PBT provides a combination of properties important to the application, including excellent flow, long term dimensional stability, stiffness and strength over a wide temperature range and chemical resistance. Production requires only moulding ��� no annealing is required to relieve internal stresses that could lead to warpage.

Società Trasformazione Polimeri s.r.l., Rescaldina (MI) Italy, finds benefit from the high heat resistance and predictable bending stiffness of Stanyl® polyamide 4,6 (PA46) in the production of monofilament for industrial and professional brushes.This monofilament must retain strength in elevated temperatures, even when subjected to water, oils, chemicals and solvents.
