Flame retardant behavior of Xantar® polycarbonates

Xantar polycarbonates are self-extinguishing with intrinsic flame resistance that is better than other common engineering plastics. In flame retardant grades, performance is further improved with “Green Technology”  additives that comply with the latest environmental directives, such as WEEE, Blue Angel and White Swan.

Typical applications requiring flame retardant Xantar
Flammability behaviour ratings

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) details…
Standard Xantar grades have ratings of V2 in all colours at minimum thicknesses of 0.75mm. For high flow grades the minimum thickness for V2 is 1.5mm. Xantar FR grades all have V0 ratings at a thickness of typically 1.5mm.
•  Special grades meet the stringent 5VA and 5VB criteria at thickness from 2 - 3mm (depending on type)

GWI  (Glow Wire Ingnition) to meet e.g. IEC 60335-1
Most  Xantar FR grades have a rating of 960C at 1.5mm.
Xantar C FR grades similarly have 960C ratings at 1.5mm
Standard Xantar® C non FR grades are typically rated at 750C

Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI)
This is an indication of self extinguishing behaviour. Grades whose LOI values are above about 20% (typical level of oxygen in the atmosphere) will self-extinguish as the oxygen concentration in the air is insufficient to sustain the flame. The higher the value the better the self extinguishing behaviour. Typical Xantar levels are
- FR Xantar and Xantar C     >30
- unfilled standard Xantar          28
- standard Xantar C                    23

Flammability of Xantar C FR grades

Xantar C FR offers the best performance possible in flame retardant PC/ABS blends. New technology gives
•  Bromine and Chlorine free grades (“Green”) with excellent FR performance
•  10-15°C higher Vicat softening temperatures
•  low volatiles, reducing out-gassing, juicing and pollution of processing equipment
•  more stable materials with cleaner, brighter natural colour
