Transparent about biotechnology

DSM is one of the largest biotechnology companies in Europe. Biotechnology has, in one form or another, been a core activity for DSM for more than hundred years.

DSM Food Specialties uses both classical and modern biotechnology techniques including genetic engineering to produce its products. Biotechnology enables us to develop high quality products with better performance and offers safe, sustainable and profitable production routes.

DSM has built up considerable expertise in the use of biotechnology-based production methods and has used these methods for many years to the full satisfaction of its customers. As far as DSM is concerned, the scope for using biotechnology - both classical and modern - with the help of micro-organisms is continuously shifting. In partnership with our customers, we will continue to look for solutions and improvements and work on innovations based on modern biotechnology.

Statement on modern biotechnology

As can be seen in the ' DSM policy statement on modern biotechnology', DSM Food Specialties is transparent about the use of genetic engineering.

Choice where possible

DSM Food Specialties offers its customer base a choice between products produced with or without genetically modified micro-organisms where possible.

One of the examples of DSM's broad portfolio in this respect are coagulants. A prime example of a product produced with genetically engineered micro-organisms is Maxiren® - a pure chymosin derived from the genetically modified yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. Alternatively microbial coagulants such as Fromase® and Suparen® and a range of animal rennets are available as well.
