Dairy Ingredients Products: LAFTI® Range

The LAFTI® probiotics are a carefully selected range of strains characterized by the established evidence of their functionality in vitro and in vivo.

It has long been known that specific strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium can positively influence human well-being. The microbial community of the bowel is a complex ecosystem which can be disturbed by many external factors including stress, medication and infection. Probiotics can supplement indigenous microbes positively influencing and sustaining the balance of our intestinal microflora.

Probiotics have been subjected to a substantial number of efficacy tests. These studies have indicated that probiotics may have a wide variety of positive health effects, including:

  • Reducing diarrhoea from a variety of infectious agents
  • Stimulating the immune system
  • Diminishing recurrence of superficial bladder tumors
  • Controlling atopic eczema in infants with food allergies

DSM has identified a collection of commercially important LAFTI® strains, specifically developed by CRC for Food Industry Innovation in Sydney, Australia. All LAFTI® strains ( LAFTI L10, LAFTI B94 and LAFTI L26) can be differentiated by their ability to survive:

  • Proven survival in the GI tract
  • Proven survival during processing
  • Proven survival in food products

Each of the commercial strains has established in vitro and in vivo evidence of functional benefits. Both in vitro studies and vivo animal studies represent preliminary stages before the potential functional health benefit can be proven in vivo human studies. DSM is currently performing several human studies with the LAFTI® strains to expand the portfolio of evidence.

The DELVO-PRO LAFTI cultures can be applied in yoghurts, milk drinks and cheeses and in a wide range of other food products.
