Stamicarbon / DSM Licensing Center, the licensing department of Royal DSM N.V.
and Qlyte B.V. today announce their cooperation for the commercialization of
the Subcoal ® technology. In this partnership Qlyte, a spin-off company from
DSM, will exclusively commercialize DSM’s proprietary Subcoal ® technology in
Europe. DSM and Qlyte will jointly continue technology development for the
Subcoal ® technology. Pejman Djavdan, Managing Director of DSM Licensing

Subcoal ® technology
The Subcoal ® technology concerns
DSM's proprietary process and application technologies for the separation and
processing of cellulose/plastics fractions from municipal solid waste,
industrial waste and/or reject streams from the paper & pulp industry. These
cellulose/plastic waste streams can be processed to high-quality fuels with
energy equivalence to coal. Subcoal ® product can be co-combusted in
coal-fired power plants, lime kilns, cement kilns and/or other industrial
furnaces. The cellulose fraction of the fuel is CO 2 neutral and therefore
helps to reduce CO 2 emissions by these furnaces. In 2000, the Subcoal ®
process technology for the manufacturing of high-quality fuels has
successfully been implemented in a large scale paper mill of SmurfitKappa in
Roermond (the Netherlands).
