Subcoal® Technology

The Subcoal® technology converts cellulose/plastic waste streams into high-quality fuels. DSM Research developed this technology in the ‘90s to address the increasing waste costs of the paper and pulp industry.

Globally, there is a growing awareness of environmental issues and a fear that fossil fuels will become scarce in the future. The Subcoal® technology is well positioned to address these issues and to connect both the waste and fuel markets. Both parties benefit from the value proposition Subcoal® offers.

Subcoal® is a proven concept: since 2000, the Subcoal® technology has been implemented on a commercial scale at Smurfit Kappa Packaging in the Netherlands (known as the Rofire® plant). This plant produces consistent, high-quality fuel pellets from a cellulose/plastic reject stream. These Rofire® pellets are marketed as a sustainable alternative fuel for co-combustion with coal in cement and lime kilns.

Applications
The patented process and application technology is suitable for a wide variety of cellulose/plastic waste streams. Waste collection companies and paper mills could apply this technology in their business operations.

Benefits

  • Economic:
The Subcoal® technology addresses the issue of rising gate fees for waste disposal and the increasing cost of fossil fuels.
  • Environmental:
Subcoal® fuel replaces conventional fuels such as coal, with its high level of cellulose representing a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions.
  • Practical:
Subcoal® fuel pellets are relatively hard, easy to transport and easy to handle.

Licensing

  • Existing:
DSM’s exclusive partner for the Subcoal® technology in Europe is Qlyte Technologies B.V. Qlyte builds new Subcoal® manufacturing facilities throughout Europe and further develops the business chain between waste feedstock and fuel consumers.
