Heerlense Bernardinus College wins Meet the Boss final - 100 high school students debate about chemistry

On October 3, 2006 the Bernardinus College from Heerlen won the nationwide Meet the Boss debating competition. They received a certificate and cash prize from the hands of ‘boss’ Rein Willems, president director of Shell Nederland and chairman of the Association of the Dutch Chemical Industry (VNCI). Second prize went to the Twickel College from Hengelo.

Frank Nieuwhof, member of the Rijnlands Lyceum team from Wassenaar, was named by the jury best debater of the more than 100 participating high school students. In recognition he was cloaked in a special ‘debate jacket’ and can spend a day with a second chamber member.

Association of the Dutch Chemical Industry (VNCI) organized the Meet the Boss debating competition in the build up to the Day of the Chemistry on October 7th. In this debate concerning views about the chemical industry, four school teams debated with each other and with a ‘boss’ from the chemical industry. The Rijnlands from Wassenaar, the Bernardinus College from Heerlen, the Twickel College from Hengelo and SG Roncalli from Bergen op Zoom had previously won their regional qualifying rounds.

The objective of the Meet the Boss program is to introduce chemistry students to the chemical business community in an appealing way.
