DSM Nutritional Products launched a new lutein beadlet - lutein 5% CWS/S-TG -
to expand its animal-free ingredients portfolio for the food and dietary
supplement market. With this launch DSM is following the strategy to react to
the market need and consumer requirement for animal-free ingredients. DSM
portfolio consists already of animal-free product forms of beta-carotene,
Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, ALL-Q™ (coenzyme Q10) and OPTISHARP™
(zeaxanthin).
Lutein 5% CWS/S-TG combines a cold water soluble form for the
fortification of effervescent tablets, food and beverage products with the
tablet grade form suitable for a range of tablet applications. Lutein 5%
CWS/S-TG delivers excellent performance in regard of stability and
handling properties and furthermore contains no ingredient of animal origin.
Food and supplement products can be simply and effectively fortified with
DSM’s free lutein.
Lutein is a carotenoid found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach; it is
an important antioxidant and filter of damaging blue light. In humans, lutein
from food or supplements is deposited in the center of the eye, in the macula
lutea of the retina (“yellow spot”). Lutein protects the sensitive cells in
the retina by its antioxidant and blue-light filtering properties. Several
studies have shown a positive relationship between consumption of lutein and a
lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, the
leading causes for acquired blindness in the world.
