Six weeks after signing an agreement on sale and purchase of the CRINA
business, Intervet International (part of Akzo Nobel, Netherlands) and DSM
have closed the deal on Wednesday May 31, 2006. As this is the first
acquisition of DSM Nutritional Products after its recent reorganization it is
fully in line with the chosen strategy to boost full growth of new business.
As of June 1, 2006 DSM Nutritional Products will be responsible for managing
the existing CRINA business portfolio including its future pipeline. An
essential part of the transfer will be the continuation of the well
established CRINA brand for existing and future products. It stands for
successful development and marketing of blends of essential oil compounds with
synergetic effects adapted to the specific needs of the targeted animal
species. As a platform for future innovation it complements the current DSM
project portfolio for the development of plant derived Eubiotics.
CRINA originally founded in 1960, is based in Gland, Switzerland and employs
currently 19 people. In 2005 CRINA had annual sales of ca. EUR 6 million with
the biggest growth realized in the ruminant segment.
The CRINA product range will complement the current Eubiotic portfolio
(products maintaining animal health and performance via gut flora modulation)
of DSM Nutritional Products. Whereas CYLACTIN®, MicroSource S® and VevoVitall®
mainly focus on Swine applications CRINA offers synergies to target ruminants
and poultry diets. Based on current projections the potential future market of
plant extracts/ essential oils is estimated between EUR 100 and 150 million
within 10 years.
