Source: Natural constituents of animal and vegetable lipids
Function: Two PUFAs, linoleic acid (omega-6 PUFA) and alpha-linolenic
acid (omega-3 PUFA) are termed essential fatty acids because they are required
for optimal health but cannot be synthesized by the body. They therefore must
be supplied by the diet. Existing scientific data has shown that LC-PUFAs, the
long chain derivatives of these fatty acids, provide a range of health
benefits. For the n-3 family these benefits are primarily in cardiovascular
health, growth and development of the brain and neural systems in babies, and
diseases with an inflammatory component (rheumatoid arthritis). For the n-6
family, the benefits are primarily in skin health and also in the promotion of
growth and development of babies.
