Aroma chemicals
Intermediates for the fragrances industry

Smell is one of our most powerful senses
For many decades now, DSM Nutritional Products has been one of the leading producers of aroma chemicals for the fragrances industry. These products are an integral part of DSM Nutritional Products’ vitamin production.

In response to customer needs, DSM Nutritional Products has now decided to establish a new unit: ‘Intermediates’. Aroma chemicals form the backbone of this new unit. We want to expand our current business position with a clear focus on the key segments and customers of the fragrances industry.

DSM is the reliable and responsive partner the fragrances industry needs. We are able to give support to our customers in this very dynamic market, which is faced with a continuous concentration process and which has an ongoing need for better and innovative products. An important capability for the fragrances industry is the ability to supply any volume of product, from initial pilot volumes all the way up to the larger volumes needed for commercially successful products. Between them, DNP’s R&D and production facilities can handle any volume that might be required.

Our high-tech multi-purpose facilities for intermediates, combined with our drive for innovation, form a valuable asset for the fragrance market. The basis for this ‘new’ activity is provided by our high-performance technology, our high quality standards, and our capacity to integrate it into our leading vitamin production and global distribution network. This allows us to supply our customers with a wide range of products throughout the world.

Our production of aroma chemicals is based on the terpene chemistry. Benefiting from our solid technological background, many years of experience and highest quality standards, we produce a wide range of more than 30 base products: e.g. linalool, linalyl acetate, tetrahydrolinalool, nerolidol and derived products, as well as aroma chemicals such as isonaline (methyl gamma ionone) and b-ionone. The history of DNP in aroma chemicals goes back to the 1950s, when a process for the manufacturing of vitamin A and E and related products was developed. Consequently a production site was built in Lalden, Switzerland. On the basis of terpene chemistry a range of high-quality aroma chemicals was developed. Beta-ionone and related production started in the 1970s when a new Vitamins unit was built in Sisseln (Switzerland). Production capacity expansions and process development improvements have followed continuously since.
