DSM Nutritional Products is pleased to confirm that Hy•D® is now officially authorized for use in pig feed in the European Union.
After intensive work by DSM scientists and regulatory experts, and a positive safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority, approval was granted according to Commission Regulation 887/2009. As of the 16th of October, the date of legal enforcement of the regulation approving Hy•D®, the product can be sold for use in pig feed in the European Community.
DSM Nutritional Products’ ROVIMIX Hy•D® 1.25% has long been globally approved and used for poultry. In addition to Asia and Latin America now swine producers in Europe can also enjoy the economic benefit deriving from the use of Hy•D®.
Hy•D® as 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is one step ahead in the metabolism of vitamin D3. It bypasses the critical first step of hydroxylation in the liver and reaches the blood stream quickly and efficiently. Several trial results have shown that with Hy•D® blood levels of 25- hydroxyvitamin D3 in swine were increased and served as a readily available substrate for fulfilling the needs of today’s high producing swine.
Especially sows and gilts benefit from the supplementation of Hy•D®; e.g. less gilts are culled due to structural failure and productivity in sows is improved. In fact, forthcoming research findings suggest that Hy•D® supplementation in breeding swine has a clear potential to contribute significantly to lifetime performance as well as to the well being of the animal.
In recent swine conferences organized by DSM Nutritional Products at 5 different European locations (October 8th - 15th 2009) a first inside look at Hy•D® for swine was provided by guest speakers from the U.S. & Mexico.
