DSM Nutritional Products announced data from two analyses of the first human study of resVida® trans-resveratrol presented at the 4th International Conference on Polyphenols and Health (ICPH) in Yorkshire, England, Dec. 7-10, 2009 and the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) and Nutrition Society of New Zealand (NSNZ) Joint Annual Scientific Meeting in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, Dec. 8-11, 2009. The cardiovascular health benefits of resVida® shown by these data are among the first to exhibit health benefits in humans by any trans-resveratrol dietary ingredient.
In a double blind placebo controlled trial, human subjects were given orally three different doses of resVida® trans-resveratrol (30, 90 and 270 mg) which were all well absorbed into the blood stream in a dose dependent manner. The target of this study was to measure the influence of resveratrol on the reactivity of blood vessels which is a bio-marker linked to the functioning of the cardiovascular system. In the study, blood vessel reactivity was measured by blocking blood flow in the forearm for several minutes and measuring the degree of dilation of the brachial artery after release of the blocking cuff. The study showed that resVida® was readily absorbed and significantly improved blood vessel function compared to placebo at all three doses, as assessed by acute flow-mediated dilation (FMD). FMD is the ability of the main artery in the upper arm (the brachial artery) to expand as blood passes through. FMD is a recognized indicator of blood vessel function and sustained improvements in FMD are associated with a healthy cardiovascular system. The diameter of the artery increased by 62% at the 30 mg dose when compared to placebo, rising to 91% improvement at the 270 mg dose.1,2
About Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant nutrient that helps protect the body from the aging effects of free radicals and oxidative stress, which can lead to premature aging of cells. Scientific studies have shown that concentrated resveratrol activates the human genes responsible for longevity, survival and cardiovascular health, as well exerts promising effects against certain diseases. Resveratrol mimics the effect of calorie restriction3,4,5, the only scientific intervention proven to slow aging and extend life.6
About resVida® Trans-resveratrol
resVida® is a 99 percent pure form of trans-resveratrol with self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status by a nationally recognized, independent panel of experts in the US. resVida® is produced according to Food GMPs and is free from pesticide and herbicide residues. resVida® is the only trans-resveratrol with a comprehensive safety package and demonstrated absorption, or bioavailability, in humans, which has been proven in multiple studies. Because of its high purity, resVida® has little or no impact on flavour and colour characteristics making it ideal for the inclusion in most food, beverages or dietary supplements.
