Aquaculture: Riboflavin

Requirements

Table 1 lists riboflavin requirements for various species.

The flavins are light-sensitive, undergoing photochemical degradation. Riboflavin is moderately soluble in water (10 to 13 mg/dl) and ethanol but insoluble in ether, chloroform and acetone. It is unstable under alkaline conditions.

Table 1

Riboflavin in feedstuffs is almost exclusively bound to proteins, mainly in the form of FMN or FAD. Microalgae have been found to contain relatively high concentrations, 20 to 40 µg of riboflavin per gram dry weight (Brown, et al., 1997). Riboflavinís utilization is dependent on their hydrolytic conversion to free riboflavin.
