Vitamin B6 is the common name for all 2-methyl-3,5-dihydroxy-methylpyridine derivatives exhibiting the biologic activity of pyridoxine (Illus. 1). Pyridoxine is the common name of one vitamin B6-active compound, 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-4,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-pyridine. The biologically active analogs of pyridoxine are the aldehyde, pyridoxal, and the amine, pyridoxamine.
Pyridoxine is usually supplied commercially as pyridoxine hydrochloride, which contains approximately 82% pyridoxine.
