Vitamin D is the generic name for all steroids qualitatively exhibiting the biologic activity of cholecalciferol (Illus. 1). The two major natural sources of vitamin D are ergocalciferol (vitamin D2, which occurs predominantly in plants) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3, which occurs in animals). One IU of vitamin D3 is equal to 0.025 µg of cholecalciferol.
