Aquaculture: Vitamin D

Requirements

Table 1 lists vitamin D requirements for various species.

Vitamins D2 and D3 are white to yellowish powders that are insoluble in water, moderately soluble in fats, oils and ethanol and freely soluble in acetone, ether and petroleum ether. Vitamin D is sensitive to oxygen, light and iodine. Heating or mild acidity can result conversion to inactive forms.

Table 1

Vitamin D2 did not promote growth as well as an equal amount of D3 when fed to catfish (Andrews et al., 1980). Brown and Robinson (1992) did not find a difference between the ability of D2 and D3 to promote growth in catfish. Based on growth, D3 was 3.27 times as potent as D2 in rainbow trout (Barnett et al., 1982a).

Certainly it appears that water chemistry in particular dramatically affects vitamin D metabolism in the fish and its interaction with calcium uptake and regulation.
