After feeding brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) for 20 weeks a diet containing 5,500 IU of vitamin E (as dl-alpha-tocopherol) per kg, there was a significant reduction in weight and in hematocrit level (Poston and Livingston, 1969).
Tokuda and Takeuchi (1995) found that feeding diets containing 10,000 IU of alpha-tocopherol per kg to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) for 40 days promoted lipid accumulation in liver tissue, although liver function was not impaired. The high vitamin E level was also found to lower serum lipid levels and result in lower muscle lipid levels compared to fish fed diets containing 100 IU of vitamin E (Tokuda and Takeuchi, 1999).
