Beauty from within

Skin health is highly dependent on the availability of nutrients which can be supplied topically in the case of lotions and creams or from the inside through supplementation.

There are 6 main areas where micronutrients, when ingested, can influence skin health:

• Immune regulation

• UV protection

• Oxidative stress protection

• Anti-wrinkling and skin repair

• Skin barrier function and lipid metabolism

• Skin structure and metabolism

DSM Nutritional Products Portfolio of ingredients for skin protection, nourishing and hydration from within include:

• Calcium D Pantothenate (Vitamins B5) - Accelerates the wound healing process, increases the cell division and protein synthesis and increases skin strength. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) - A co-enzyme which plays a key role in the cross-linking of collagen when taken orally.

• Vitamin C - Serves as first line antioxidative defence. It decreases oxidative stress, stimulates the collagen and elastin formation and promotes wound healing. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Vitamin E - Serves as first line antioxidative defence. It protects cell membranes from oxidation, reduces inflammation, stimulates immune response in skin cells subjected to UV radiation and enhances wound healing by reducing inflammation. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Vitamin K1 - Has been shown to increase production of ATP in skin cells.

• ß-carotene (CaroCare®) - Serves as an efficient antioxidant quencher of free oxygen radicals. It protects from sunburn (sun protection factor equivalent to SPF 2), protects against UV-induced suppression of immune function and reduces expression of enzymes which degrade collagen in skin cells when taken orally.

• Biotin - Acts as cofactor for several mitochondrial enzymes. It improves growth of nails and hair and is necessary for a healthy skin. Effects seen when taken orally.

• Redivivo™ (lycopene), Lutein, Optisharp™ (zeaxanthin) - Serve as efficient antioxidant quenchers of free oxygen radicals. They protect from sunburn (sun protection factor equivalent to SPF 2 - 4) when taken orally.

• All-Q™ (Co-enzyme Q10) - A natural, vitamin-like compound found in cell mitochondria is a potent intracellular antioxidant and free radical scavenger. It stabilizes cell membranes and is an essential cofactor in the generation of energy (production of ATP). All cellular functions depend on adequate supply of ATP.

• Omega 3 and 6 LC PUFA’s - Contribute to moist and smooth skin, to more flexible and mobile cell membranes and enhance the barrier function of the skin to reduce the transdermal water loss. They also protect against UV-induced DNA damage and manage inflammatory skin disorders. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Teavigo™ (EGCG) - Possesses chemo-preventive effects against chemical carcinogens and UV-induced skin tumor formation in animal models. It acts as a free oxygen radical scavenger and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Teavigo™ also stimulates keratin forming cells and promotes skin regeneration. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Bonistein™(genistein) - An isoflavone prevalent in soy with weak estrogenic activity. Bonistein is an antioxidant that inhibits tyrosine kinase, photo-carcinogenesis and photo-aging in hairless mice. It also reduces UVB-induced sunburn in humans.

• Hidrox® (hydroxytyrosol) – Is a natural antioxidant from olives with potent anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces oxidative stress and demonstrates anti-microbial activity as well as protects against UV-induced skin damage and serves to manage inflammatory skin disorders. Effects are seen by both oral intake and topical application.

• Lafti® (probiotic) - Probiotics may improve immune function of skin.
